Roots rarely break sound concrete on their own. They lift slabs and driveways as they thicken near the surface, and they enter sewer lines through joints and cracks that are already leaking. On Mississippi clay soils, the bigger foundation issue is soil shrinkage during drought.
Driveways and sidewalks
Surface roots from water oak, willow oak, sweetgum and silver maple thicken year over year and lift the slab above them. This is the most common real root damage we see in Columbus neighborhoods. Root pruning can buy time on a small percentage of the root system, but cutting major buttress roots to save a sidewalk can destabilize the tree, and that trade is worth an honest conversation before anyone starts.
Foundations
Roots do not push through a sound footing. On the clay soils common here, the mechanism is moisture: a large tree pulling water from under a slab during a dry summer can shrink the clay and cause differential settlement. Distance and species matter more than root barriers.
Sewer and water lines
Roots follow moisture. They find joints and hairline cracks in older clay and cast iron laterals, then mass inside the pipe. A sound modern PVC line with sealed joints is rarely invaded. Repeated backups plus a mature tree over the lateral usually means the pipe already had a defect.
What to do about it
Have the tree assessed before the concrete is replaced, not after. In some cases the answer is grinding the slab and adding a flexible section. In others, especially with a declining tree already on the list, removal and a replacement planting set further from the drive is the cheaper long-term answer.
