What Stump Grinding Costs and When It Is Worth It

How stumps are priced, how deep the grind should go, and what to do with the hole afterward.

Stump grinding in Columbus, MS is generally priced by stump diameter measured at ground level, plus access and root flare size. A standard grind goes 6 to 8 inches below grade for sod or seed, and 12 inches or deeper when you are replanting, pouring or setting a post.

How the price is built

Diameter at the soil line is the base number, not the height of what is left standing. After that: how far the buttress roots run, whether the machine can reach the stump through a gate or has to be walked around a building, and whether the grindings stay on site or get hauled and replaced with topsoil.

Rock, buried concrete, old fence wire and hidden utilities all add time, which is why a walk on the property beats a phone quote.

How deep the grind should be

For grass or a flower bed, 6 to 8 inches under grade is enough. For a replacement tree in the same hole, a slab, a fence post or a driveway extension, go 12 inches or deeper and chase the major roots, because leftover wood keeps settling for years.

What happens to the hole

Grindings are mostly wood and air, so a hole backfilled with chips will sink. Either crown the backfill several inches above grade and expect it to settle, or have the chips hauled and the void filled with clean topsoil. Wood chips left in a planting hole also tie up nitrogen and stall a young tree.

When leaving the stump is fine

Back of a rural lot, nothing near it, nothing being built: leaving it is a reasonable call. Within 20 feet of the house it is a different decision, because stumps in Mississippi host carpenter ants and termites and keep sprouting suckers.

Not always, but it is cheaper on the same visit than as a separate trip, and it is the difference between a finished yard and an obstacle you mow around for a decade.
